The use of LED technology in street lighting could shave $50 million dollars a year and 337,000 tonnes off greenhouse gas emissions, according to an article published by The Sydney Morning Herald.

The City of Sydney Council is currently planning to replace 9000 streetlights  with light emitting diode (LED) technology with the aim of cutting the council’s energy spending by up to 40%.

Although the initial cost of changing from arc-tube discharge to LED lamps is costed at $600 million, with extensive work needed to change existing infrastructure, the cost would be recouped within four years of the full installation.
