Melbourne commuters will be able to use their phone to pay for travel from this week.

Passengers with an Android smartphone can use their mobile at existing ‘myki’ gates and readers on Melbourne’s trams, at train stations and on buses.

The state is celebrating introducing the new option without the need to build new infrastructure.

The introduction of the new mobile ticketing option follows a year of extensive testing.

Participants in a trial program scored the mobile system 80 out of 100 for overall satisfaction.

The government says discussions and technical assessments are being carried out to find ways for the system to be expanded to other smartphone platforms.

Mobile myki will be available to use from 7:00am on Thursday, 28 March.
