The ‘changing of the guard’ in Queensland councils and a new State Government are driving challenging and exciting times, according to outgoing Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ) President Paul Bell.

Cr Bell, who will be stepped down at this week’s LGAQ Annual Conference, said local government has a ‘full agenda’ ahead of it.

“Over three days we expect to see rigorous and constructive debate around a number of issues, including the amended Local Government Act, the need for improved productivity, and the looming issue of a referendum on the Constitutional recognition of local government,” Cr Bell said.

Cr Bell’s comments come after 400 delegates from the state’s local government bodies descended on the Brisbane Convention centre to discuss the sector’s policy agenda for the next 12 months.
