Clr Khal Asfour has been elected as the new Mayor of Bankstown, following the resignation of Clr Tania Mihailuk who stepped down last week to focus on her obligations as the State Member for Bankstown.

In accepting the role at an Extraordinary General Meeting of the Council, Mayor Asfour said it was a privilege to have been elected to serve as Mayor of this great City.

"Since being elected to Council, I have worked hard to deliver important infrastructure improvements, encourage business growth and provide support to our community based organisations and service clubs.

"As Mayor, I look forward to continuing to ensure that Bankstown remains a city of progress and will lead a Council committed to delivering positive outcomes for our community."

When speaking of his vision for the city, Mayor Asfour also paid tribute to outgoing Mayor Clr Mihailuk on her achievements, strong leadership and dedication to serving the community.

Councillor Asfour, 33, was elected as an East Ward Councillor in 2004 and Deputy Mayor in 2008.

At the same meeting, Clr Allan Winterbottom was elected to the position of Deputy Mayor.
