Senior Strategic Planner

 

About the Planning Strategy & Urban Growth Department
This department is part of our Planning & Development Division, and is responsible for developing policies, strategies and plans that manage the sustainable growth of Geelong to deliver liveable communities and places.  The Department also coordinates the Future Proofing Geelong program.

About the role
This position will contribute to establishing, updating and implementing strategic visions and plans for land use and development within the City of Greater Geelong and facilitating appropriate and sustainable development.

Key responsibilities

  1. Role model and promote Council values in all aspects of duty.
  2. Project manage the review, preparation and implementation of Growth Area Precinct Structure Plans, Development Contribution Plans, associated plans, guidelines and policies.
  3. Manage and action the preparation and implementation of strategic plans, guidelines, policies and planning projects.
  4. Manage and action the preparation and processing of planning scheme amendments in accordance with relevant planning legislation.
  5. Identify opportunities and solutions to issues that may impact on the operation, direction and activities of the Planning Strategy & Urban Growth Unit.
  6. Represent the  Planning Strategy & Urban Growth Unit on internal and external groups as required.
  7. Provide professional advice and ensure strategic planning considerations are addressed within the Department and by consultants (engaged by Council) during the preparation of strategic plans, policies, guidelines and amendments to the Planning Scheme.
  8. Review, analyse and comment on documents provided by officers, consultants, state government departments, agencies and other external sources.

Key selection criteria

  1. Tertiary qualification in Town Planning or related field.
  2. Extensive experience in strategic planning, including delivering significant planning projects and managing planning scheme amendments in accordance with the Planning and Environment Act and Victorian Planning Provisions.
  3. Experience in growth area planning, including the preparation and delivery of structure plans, strategic plans and related planning guidelines and policies.
  4. Highly developed written and verbal communication skills, interpersonal skills and the ability to translate technical information into plain English.
  5. Strong conceptual skills with experience conducting research, analysing data and synethesising results into tangible plans and outcomes.
  6. Excellent project management skills and the demonstrated ability to manage own time to achieve targets within a set timeline.
