Senior Statutory Planners
About the City Development Department
This department is part of our Planning and Development Division, and is responsible for the provision of information, advice and assistance regarding municipal building services, planning permits, planning scheme amendments and rezoning.
About the role
The Senior Statutory Planner provides an effective and efficient service to the public which facilitates the assessment and issue of Permits and Approvals for quick response on all forms of developments proposed, and provides clients with a customer focused professional advisory service; and provides coaching, mentoring for junior professionals in accordance with Council’s policies and guidelines.
There are two permanent full-time positions available.
Key responsibilities
- Role model and promote Council values in all aspects of duty.
- Investigate and evaluate development applications (including major development applications) within a team environment to determine compliance with relevant legislation and ensure applications are dealt with in the prescribed time limits.
- Represent the City of Greater Geelong in public forums, legal proceedings and appeal hearings.
- Assist with and from time to time carry out investigations and inspections to assist clients and ensure compliance with relevant legislation and policy.
- Establish positive communications with clients and the general public and promote the need for adherence to the various statutes, legislation, local laws and policies.
- Promote the City of Greater Geelong’s policy of Excellence in Customer Service. Identify, implement and review strategies to improve service quality.
- Assist with development, coordination, integration and provision of regulatory services.
- Assist with the establishment, development and maintenance of systems and procedures used within the unit.
Key selection criteria
- Tertiary qualification in town planning or urban studies (or related field) and extensive experience in a local Government town planning office.
- Theoretical and practical knowledge and ability to interpret town-planning legislation and practices and association
- Thorough understanding of the operation of local government, the Victorian planning system and the legal process generally within Victoria
- Highly developed analytical, investigative and communication skills.
- Proven experience in mentoring staff.
- Ability to negotiate and resolve conflict.
