Town Planners

About the City Development Department

This department is part of our Planning and Development Division, and is responsible for the provision of information, advice and assistance regarding municipal building services, planning permits, planning scheme amendments and rezoning.

About the role

This position provides an effective and efficient service to facilitate the assessment and issue of permits and approvals for all forms of proposed developments, and provides a professional and customer focused advisory service.

We have two opportunities for qualified Town Planners.

 Key responsibilities

  1. Role model and promote Council values in all aspects of duty.
  2. Assist with the investigation and evaluation of development applications within a team environment.
  3. Analyse applications to determine compliance with relevant legislation and ensure applications are dealt with in the prescribed time limits.
  4. Represent the City of Greater Geelong in public forums, legal proceedings and appeal hearings.
  5. Assist with, and from time to time carry out, investigations and inspections to assist clients and ensure compliance with relevant legislation and policy.
  6. Assist the public with advice and assistance associated with the preservation, renovation and maintenance of heritage buildings within the City.
  7. Assist with the provision of advice and recommendations on applications concerning gaming and liquor control legislation.
  8. Establish positive communications with clients and the general public and educate and promote the need for adherence to the various statutes, legislation, local laws and policies.

We have a permanent full-time Band 6 opportunity for an experienced candidate who has the following key attributes:

  1. Relevant experience in local government town planning.
  2. Tertiary qualification in town planning or urban studies.
  3. Expert theoretical and practical knowledge.
  4. Ability to interpret town planning legislation. 
  5. Awareness of current trends and issues affecting town planning.
  6. Excellent analytical and problem solving skills.
  7. Advanced organisational skills

We also have a permanent Band 5 opportunity for a recent graduate or less experienced candidate who can demonstrate the following key attributes:

  1. Tertiary qualification in town planning or urban studies,.
  2. Theoretical and practical knowledge of, and the ability to interpret, town planning legislation.  
  3. Awareness of current trends and issues affecting town planning.
  4. Developed analytical and investigative skills.  
  5. Industry experience will be highly regarded.
