Located along the banks of the Yarra, The City of Stonnington is a vibrant and diverse municipality. With a population exceeding 100,000 residents and covering an area of 25 km2 Stonnington has a variety of parks, gardens, cultural centres and a highly impressive range of shopping strips and amazing restaurants.
Stonnington has an enviable record as an innovative and progressive Council and we have an exciting opportunity for you to become a part of this by joining our Economic Development Unit on a 4 year contract, to attract new business and facilitate and support the development and growth of the creative industries and existing small business. Located at our modern and sustainable office on Glenferrie Road, you’ll be surrounded by an abundance of café’s, restaurants and shops.
As a Business Engagement Officer, you’ll be responsible for delivering actions from the Vacant to Vibrant Action Plan that facilitates the activation of vacant commercial properties within Stonnington’s shopping precincts. You’ll also be responsible for the approval processes for new small businesses, liaising internally to ensure permits are progressing in a timely manner. Top priorities of this position include:

- Developing strategies and initiatives to increase business and employment opportunities for Stonnington residents
- Implementing strategies and actions to retain, develop and grow existing businesses and industry in Stonnington
- Supporting creative industries that have a positive social, employment and environmental impact.
To succeed in this position, we’re looking for a motivated and dedicated professional with qualifications in business, planning construction, project management or similar and experience in:
- Implementing programs and actions related to creative industries and small businesses to create positive outcomes, business attraction, retention, development and employment
- Managing stakeholders in both industry and across Council including commercial landlords, real estate agents and developers, who may have conflicting expectations.
Additionally, the successful candidate will need to have a strong customer service focus, well-developed communication skills for persuading, convincing, and negotiating with a range of stakeholders and effective strategies for building and maintaining relationships.
