Remuneration: Salary range between $88,701 and $94,166 plus 13% superannuation

Role Overview

This role will be pivotal in meeting the business needs of the Planning and Development Directorate in delivering a major priority of the Corporate Plan (the Planning Scheme and associated amendments) and is one of the key drivers to support Council’s vision of being "The Natural Choice to Live, Work and Play" through a liveable, prosperous, well designed and sustainable region.

The purpose of this role is to lead and deliver timely review of the Gympie Regional Council Planning Scheme in line with legislative requirements, and provide expert contribution to land use planning policy through the delivery of major strategic projects to strengthen local communities, boost the local economy and reinforce a sense of place through a focus on streetscape and public domain improvements.

What we are looking for

This is a specialist role, requiring significant planning experience, technical expertise and communication and coordination skills.  Council is seeking a Degree qualified Planner, with relevant experience in taking the lead on the preparation of Planning Scheme reviews and associated amendments, strategic planning policy and delivering major planning projects.  Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills with be critical to success in this role, providing required negotiation ability, collaboration and the ability to provide clearly articulated expert technical advice on matters related to a local government planning framework to both internal and external stakeholders.

To be considered for this role, candidates must be able to demonstrate:

  • Qualifications (Post Graduate Degree or Degree) in Planning recognised for corporate membership by the Planning Institute of Australia.
  • Relevant experience leading the preparation of Planning Scheme reviews and associated amendments, strategic planning policy, and providing expert technical advice on matters related to a local government planning framework.
  • Extensive knowledge of statutory requirements, best practice and community engagement techniques relevant to making and amending Planning Schemes, development of strategic planning policy and delivery of major projects.
  • An ability to manage significant strategic planning projects with multiple stakeholders and deliver on time and within budget.
  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to negotiate outcomes, collaborate and work constructively with internal and external stakeholders at all levels.
  • Highly developed written communication skill to facilitate policy deliberations including report preparation for Council meetings and correspondence to external government agencies.
  • Experience in designing and delivering internal training packages and stakeholder information sessions.
  • Skill in assisting with budget preparation and monitoring expenditure.
  • Ability to work autonomously when required, and also effectively lead a multidisciplinary project team.

Desirable for this position will be:

  • Experience with local area/structure planning processes and preparation of local government infrastructure plans/priority infrastructure plans.
  • Project Management qualification.
  • Certificate IV in Training and Education.
