Freshwater & Groundwater Scientist - New Zealand

We are currently seeking two experienced and qualified scientists to join our dynamic and dedicated Natural Resources Science Team which provides environmental scientific advice and expertise in relation to freshwater, coastal, air and soil resources.

Freshwater Scientist

We are currently seeking an experienced and qualified Freshwater Scientist to implement and lead Northland Regional Council’s water quality monitoring and research programmes.

In this newly created position, you will be responsible for undertaking freshwater quality investigations to help further develop our understanding of past and existing impacts on freshwater quality in Northland.

You will ideally have a post graduate qualification in Environmental Science specialising in Freshwater Quality and have at least 5 years’ experience in a similar role and an in-depth understanding of freshwater systems, National Environmental Monitoring Standards and the Resource Management Act.

Groundwater Scientist

We are currently seeking an experienced and qualified Groundwater Scientist to implement and lead Northland Regional Council’s groundwater quality and quantity monitoring and research programmes.

In this newly created position, you will be responsible for undertaking hydrogeological investigations to help further develop our understanding of past and existing impacts on groundwater in Northland.

You will ideally have a post graduate qualification in Environmental Science specialising in Hydrogeology and have at least 5 years’ experience in a similar role and an in-depth understanding of groundwater systems, National Environmental Monitoring Standards and the Resource Management Act.

What you will bring

Both roles will require to perform advanced statistical analysis and reporting on freshwater quality and groundwater data as well as providing scientific advice and expertise to a wide range of customers and have opportunities to be involved in national projects. Another key component of the roles includes assisting with the development and review of scientific strategic directions for the Department.

Skills and experience in project management, data analysis and reporting are essential, as is an ability to communicate scientific information in an engaging and informative way.

Both roles require excellent computer skills preferably with MS Office, GIS, databases, statistical analysis and modelling, and data visualisation software such as Tableau or MS Power BI.
