The Position

The role of Research Scientist Staff in CSIRO is to conduct innovative research leading to scientific achievements that are aligned with CSIRO's strategies. You may be engaged in scientific activity ranging from fundamental research to the investigation of specific industry or community problems. You will have the opportunity to build and maintain networks, play a lead role in securing project funds, provide scientific leadership and pursue new ideas and approaches that create new concepts.

Operating from within the Model Data Fusion team in Data61, the successful candidate will participate in a number of important Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) funded projects in the grains research space. Specifically, you will a) participate in the statistical design and analysis of agricultural research experiments conducted in the field and laboratory, including multi-environment and multi-trait data; b) research and apply emerging statistical methodologies to response surface and space-time sequence problems over multiple dimensions; c) develop and implement statistical methodology for molecular technologies, including genomic selection and association analysis; and d) interact and foster strong relationships with collaborators and clients within the grains industry. The position will involve extensive interaction with Biometricians from the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, whom are joint partners on these GRCD funded projects.

Salary: AU $92K - AU $100K plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be successful you will need:

  • A doctorate and or equivalent research experience in a relevant discipline area, such as Mathematical Statistics.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply functional and technical skills to perform the job at a high level of accomplishment. Specifically:

    • Demonstrated knowledge of the principles of and ability in experimental design;

    • Expert knowledge of the principles of mathematical statistics and ability to apply and extend statistical techniques to solve applied problems arising in agricultural or biological research (in particular, expertise with linear mixed models);

    • Demonstrated expertise in the use of a major statistical software package (such as R or ASReml-R); ability to develop/program additional procedures as required.

  • Analyse, interpret and solve difficult problems arising in scientific research, engaging team and expert input to provide accurate and timely solutions.

  • Uses or deploys expert writing skills in a variety of settings and styles, including peer reviewed journals and industry publications, sensitive to the context and the impact of the message.
