About Us

Moonee Valley City Council is a vibrant municipality located in the inner north-western suburbs of Melbourne. A welcoming, culturally diverse and inclusive city, Moonee Valley is host to many beautiful parks and reserves, thriving shopping strips and vibrant arts venues.

Our highly talented and dedicated workforce is responsible for providing a range of programs and services to the community. Our employees bring differing backgrounds, experiences and unique perspectives to a collaborative work environment, making a positive impact on our community for now and in the future.

Our MV2040 Strategy envisions 'a healthy city', where together Council will create and continually improve the conditions that enable all of us to enjoy the highest level of health and wellbeing possible.

The Opportunity

The City Futures Department is currently seeking a Principal Planner to join the team for twelve months on a full-time basis to assist the Coordinator Strategic Planning and Manager City Futures to ensure our Moonee Valley 2040 strategy is implemented from a strategic planning perspective. The role doesn’t have direct-reports but does include a mentoring and advisory component, working with and guiding all the strategic planners in the team.

This is a rare opportunity to work on cutting edge planning policy and implement a new approach to strategic planning – working on 20-minute neighbourhoods rather than a broad brush approach to the whole municipality. The gazetted Planning Scheme Amendment c193 sets the scene to realise our vision. This role will make neighbourhood planning a reality.

In this role you will:

  • In partnership with the Coordinator Strategic Planning and Manager City Futures, lead the implementation of MV2040 including the development of Neighbourhood Plans, and translating MV2040 actions into clear deliverables for the team;
  • Provide principal level support and guidance to other planners in the team with all strategic planning matters; including ensuring the effective operation of Planning Scheme Amendment processes, and all aspects of Planning Panel Hearings; and
  • Managing projects which are of a complex, controversial and high-risk nature.

About You

To be suitable for this position, you will possess:

  • Degree or postgraduate qualification in Urban Planning, Social Sciences, Applied Science or related discipline, combined with extensive and diverse experience in strategic planning in Victoria.
  • Demonstrated specialist experience in strategic planning or planning policy development, particularly in the Victorian Planning system.
  • Extensive leadership experience with the ability to coach and mentor senior staff members in the areas of planning policy and planning scheme amendment processes.
  • Experience in the development and interpretation of policies and strategies for informing the future growth and development of a municipality.
  • Extensive experience in managing major planning projects and managing consultants.

Applications must be submitted through our online system mooneevalley.mercury.com.au and include a separate CV, and address the Key Selection Criteria. Applications that do not meet these requirements may not be considered.
