Senior Occupational Therapist - MRC

Forensic mental health is a specialist area within the mental health service system. The services provided by Forensicare address the needs of offenders experiencing mental health issues, the mental health sector, the justice sector and the general community. These services are delivered through three streams, inpatient services at Thomas Embling Hospital, community services through the Community Forensic Mental Health Service and prison based services at several locations. This position will be based within the Mobile Forensic Mental Health Service (MobileFMHS) at the Metropolitan Remand Centre.

The MobileFMHS is a multidisciplinary team that provides specialist mental health assessment and treatment services to prisoners experiencing mental health difficulties.

The MobileFMHS Senior Occupational Therapist will work collaboratively with clients of the MobileFMHS to empower them to determine their goals, work towards recovery and engage in the occupations they want to, need to or are expected to do, to the best of their ability. The occupational therapist will assess, interpret and intervene to improve occupational performance through identifying individual needs based on functional deficits and strengths, and through promoting occupational choices that balance work, leisure and self-care.

 

Duties:

This Senior Occupational Therapist role will:

  • Undertake occupational therapy assessments and interventions;
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of group programs, with consideration to OT specialist interventions as appropriate;
  • Consult and liaise with other key stakeholders regarding occupational therapy issues relevant to client functioning, transition and discharge planning;
  • Complete transition and discharge planning documentation describing occupational therapy involvement and recommendations;
  • Attend and contribute to the multi-disciplinary team clinical review meeting and other service-related meetings (e.g., clinical governance);

 

Requirements:

  • Demonstrated commitment to mental health consumer recovery
  • Current Registration with AHPRA.
  • Approved degree in Occupational Therapy recognised for membership of OT Australia – Australian Association of Occupational Therapists.
  • To have knowledge and understanding of the OT Australia – Australian Association of Occupational Therapists Code of Ethics and a commitment to working in a manner consistent with the code.
  • To have demonstrated highly developed skills in the forensic mental health field, knowledge and understanding of the needs of mentally ill people and of the issues of care delivery in forensic mental health.
  • To possess a demonstrated ability to establish rapport and to work collaboratively, flexibly and responsibly with patients, their families and carers, members of the multi-disciplinary team and colleagues.
