About the Environment & Waste Department
This department is part of our City Services Division, and is responsible for building a sustainable City through the facilitation, promotion and adoption of a proactive approach in the use of our natural resources.  The department also looks after the City's waste management program including the operation of our landfills, transfer stations and resource recovery centres.

About the Role
This position assists Council and the community to ensure that biodiversity and natural landscapes are retained, protected and enhanced. This will be achieved through the delivery of on-ground bush land maintenance and restoration activities within Council’s nature reserve’s network including bush land, waterway, coastal and roadside reserves.

Supervision of external contractors will be required for the planning, programming and delivery of on-ground environmental works. The incumbent will work closely with community groups, government departments and service providers.

This is a temporary full-time position for two years.

Some of the key responsibilities in this role will include:

  1. Ensuring native vegetation, retention, protection, enhancement, and re-vegetation, with a goal of improving the extent and quality of habitat and biodiversity values (flora and fauna).
  2. Assisting the development and review of Council’s programs related to nature reserves.
  3. Working collaboratively with the Environment and Biodiversity Team to deliver on ground programs in nature reserves.
  4. Assisting in the preparation of master plans and conservation management plans.
  5. Assisting in the development of business cases to support reserve management programs.
  6. Assisting in the delivery of capital projects to improve the amenity of environmental reserves.
  7. Developing and assisting friends groups and other stakeholders in the management of nature reserves.
  8. Developing and assisting in programs that actively encourage community education and involvement in protecting the biodiversity values within the municipality.

About You
To be successful in this role, you will require:

  1. Qualifications in a relevant field and/or experience in natural resource management or bushland restoration.
  2. A current Victorian driver’s licence with the ability to drive a manual vehicle.
  3. Licences or qualifications are required for the following: Level 1 chainsaw (cross cutting) operator’s certificate; Level 1 chainsaw (cross cutting) operator’s certificate; Chemical Users certificate/herbicide applicator’s licence; Level 2 first aid; Experience using GPS / GIS or qualifications in similar technologies; Experience and/or qualifications in 4WD operations; Wildfire Management qualifications and/or experience
  4. Current employee Working with Children check.
  5. Demonstrated ability to undertake manual work including lifting, working on rough and sloping ground, working in outdoor conditions, carrying and use of hand tools and powered equipment (brush cutters, chainsaws, mowers etc.).
  6. Ability to manage contractors undertaking maintenance and improvement works within environmental reserves.
