About the Social Planning & Investment Department

This department is part of our Community Life Division, and is responsible for the management of the City's social infrastructure across community planning, policy development, business development and focused marketing, and the identification and review of future social investment opportunities.

About the Role

This position leads and supports a team of staff focused on the planning, development and delivery of open space throughout the City of Greater Geelong in accordance with Council policies and priorities.

The key objective of this role is to coordinate Council’s approach to enhancing its open space network through the development and implementation of strategies, policies, plans and the application of contemporary design principles to enhance our passive open spaces, active recreation reserves and other parks.

Some of the key responsibilities in this role, will include:

  1. Leading a team to ensure development of local area plans that will drive the delivery of open space, in conjunction with key internal and external stakeholders.
  2. Creating and maintaining a culture consistent with the organisation’s values, that ensures staff feel valued, productive, engaged and supported.
  3. Leading and ensuring the development of any policies, standards, procedures and strategic documents that guide the delivery of high quality contemporary open space outcome for the community.
  4. Working collaboratively across divisions and with relevant stakeholders in planning for open space.
  5. Ensuring the department is represented and contributing (as required) to the development and review of precinct structure plans and other strategic land use planning.
  6. Ensuring the organisation is represented in broader social planning processes and consultations, with key internal and external stakeholders.
  7. Ensuring systems and processes are in place that provide data and insights on any provision or service gaps to inform future open space development priorities.
  8. Monitoring and advising on the implications arising from government policy and funding opportunities relating to open space planning.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will require:

  1. Tertiary qualifications in a relevant field and/or experience or at a comparable level of responsibility.
  2. Demonstrable experience and an excellent reputation in the leadership and management of people within a comparable organisation.
  3. Experience in developing policies and strategies to support the effective planning and delivery of open space.
  4. Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain strong collaborative working relationships with a range of community stakeholders, including developers, councillors and other key external stakeholders.
  5. Ability to effectively manage complex projects from consultation, concept development, and design phases through to full implementation.
  6. Satisfactory Police and Working with Children Checks.
