About the City Development Department
This department is part of our Planning, Design and Development Division, and is responsible for the provision of information, advice and assistance regarding municipal building services, planning permits, planning scheme amendments and rezoning.

About the Role
This position provides an effective and efficient service in relation to inspections of commercial, industrial, public institutional, residential, domestic, and ancillary applications, and is also responsible for providing clients with a customer focused professional advisory service.

Some of the key responsibilities in this role will include:

  1. Assisting with the investigation and evaluation of building applications.
  2. Ensuring that Statutory requirements, regulations and codes of practice are understood and applied consistently and fairly.
  3. Participating in a program of inspections and field investigations to assist clients and to ensure fair and proper compliance with relevant legislation and policy.
  4. Assisting in the coordination and input of various Government Departments and the General Public to meet deadlines as set.
  5. Providing clients with a professional and up to date advisory service and assisting the public with enquiries.
  6. Assisting in the taking of necessary notice procedures and/or legal action to ensure compliance with relevant legislation, local laws, policies and procedures of council.
  7. Assisting with the development and maintenance of appropriate administrative and information recording systems within the Section.
  8. Preparing reports and submissions to the Coordinator Building Services/Municipal Building Surveyor as directed and or appropriate on infringements, breaches and development proposals.

About You
To be successful in this role, you will require:

  • A degree or tertiary qualifications in Building Inspecting or Building Surveying
  • Current registration as a Registered Building Practitioner, Category of Building Inspector issued by the former Building Practitioners Board or by the Victorian Building Authority
  • A proficient theoretical and practical knowledge and ability to interpret building and associated legislation and practices.
  • An understanding of the operation of Local Government and legal process within Victoria.
  • Knowledge of Government policies and practices and awareness of current trends and issues.
  • Highly developed analytical, investigative, interpretative and problem solving skills.
