Western Australia's regional council borders appear safe for now.

The WA Local Government Association (WALGA) says there is no indication that amalgamations of councils in rural areas will go ahead, after the State Convention of the WA Nationals party passed a motion withdrawing support for the metropolitan reform process.

The Nationals are refusing to back a call to amalgamate Perth councils in a move that could see the number of municipalities cut in half.

But the party that is concerned with country areas is afraid the regions will be next.

WALGA's chief executive Ricky Burges says the State Government would have overencumbered itself by taking on reform statewide.

Ms Burges thinks amalgamations will go ahead for.

“The process in terms of the metropolitan area is pretty well advanced and I know that the report is being presented to us early next week I believe,” she said.

“Metropolitan and country, very different, and I don't think it is just a case of; 'Oh well the metro's done so now we're going to move into the country'.”
