The NSW Government has extended its policy to offer up to 10 days’ domestic violence leave to public servants.

Local government workers in NSW can now access paid leave to deal with the effects of family violence, mirroring a move last year that gave state government workers including teachers and nurses access to 10 days’ leave.

Full-time employees can take the leave to deal with the effects of, or escape from, family violence. This may include moving house, attending court or seeing the doctor.

Casual staff can also take time off without consequence.

Local Government NSW president Linda Scott, says it is good to see recognition of family violence as a workplace issue.

“Local governments are proud to support our inclusive and highly skilled workforce through challenging periods, especially given all they do for communities of NSW,” she said.

Victims of domestic violence often raise their conditions of employment as a reason for staying in dangerous situations.

Often left without the option of taking leave, inflexible workplaces can see some victims taking years to plan their escape, if at all.
