The Federal Government is spending $600 million to create the National Recovery and Resilience Agency (NRRA).

The agency will oversee national responses to major natural disasters; helping communities recover and rebuild.

It should both provide relief to communities and advise on how to mitigate the impacts of future weather events.

The formation of the agency was one of the recommendations of the bushfire royal commission.

Its projects include bushfire and cyclone-proofing houses, building levees in disaster-prone areas, and improving telecommunications infrastructure to better withstand disasters.

“In the past two years, Australians have faced floods, bushfires, cyclones, drought and now the COVID-19 pandemic and I'm determined to keep Australians safe and support the recovery of communities and regions right across Australia,” Prime Minister Scott Morrison said in a statement.

The new agency will absorb two existing recovery agencies - the National Drought and North Queensland Flood Response and Recovery Agency (NDNQFRRA), and the National Bushfire Recovery Agency.

The new body will control the Bushfire Recovery Agency's $2 billion fund, and take over long-term recovery efforts in communities affected by recent east coast floods and cyclones in Western Australia.

The Federal Government is also announcing the creation of an Australian Climate Service, which will attempt to better collate data and inform emergency management policy.
