Councils have welcomed Tasmania’s new container recycling scheme.

The Tasmanian government says it will introduce a Container Refund Scheme (CRS) across Tasmania.

Local Government Association of Tasmania President, Mayor Doug Chipman, said councils had been advocating for the scheme for a long time.

“As a sector, Local Government has been calling for action and leadership on waste and recycling and so it is pleasing to see the State Government announcing a Container Refund Scheme for Tasmania,” Cr Chipman said.

An expert reference group has been set up to support the CRS project, defining its scope, design and implementation.

“We understand the State Government remain committed to the release of a State Waste Action Plan by the end of June and look forward to understanding what further approaches they will take to tackle the myriad of waste management issues facing Tasmania,” said Cr Chipman.

“LGAT will work collaboratively with the State Government to support this important initiative,” said Mayor Chipman.
