The Victorian Local Governance Association (VLGA) has slammed the Victorian Government's appointment for Administrator of Geelong Council.

Sole Administrator, Yehudi Blacher, decided on Tuesday to recall the Council's application for a rate cap variation.

Victorian Local Governance Association President, Cr Sebastian Klein, said the decision for Geelong to apply for a rate cap variation was a decision of the democratically-elected former council and that the actions of the sole Administrator to overrule that decision undermined the integrity of his position and that of the State Government.

"As an interim measure and for a short period only, the State Government has appointed a single Administrator. He should be governed by caretaker provisions until such a time as a panel of administrators are appointed," Cr Klein said

"It is undemocratic and questionable for a single person to make these kinds of decisions alone.

"There was no discussion about the issue, no debate. There was no justification or explanation.

"This is not the sort of government that we expect in a modern society. Citizens in a free country, a free city do not expect technocrats to take these sorts of decisions.

"The sole Administrator should never have made this decision but should have waited until all administrators were appointed and allowed them to make a collective decision."
