As Manager City Environment, you will be directly responsible for setting the strategic direction for open space management, the protection and expansion of the City’s urban forest and Council’s climate change response and sustainability agenda, including waste management. You will be responsible for the management of a large in-house team and range of complex contracts.
The Manager City Environment plays a pivotal role in shaping the city’s public realm, liveability and environmental sustainability. The position involves the provision of strategic and operational leadership of four business units:
Parks and Open Space
Tree Management
Climate & Sustainability
Waste Strategy & Engagement
A key challenge of this position is the requirement to navigate between the operational and strategic elements of the position, managing large operational outdoor teams including contractors, services, and projects whilst also leading office based professionals driving strategic vision and Council planning with accountability to the Executive Leadership team.
You will be flexible and intuitive and have the competence required to manage a diverse workforce including both outdoor & indoor professionals including the ability to smoothly navigate the demands of each environment within the political nature of Local Government.
Using your leadership experience you can cultivate a workplace culture that prioritises health, safety, and inclusivity and Actively champion and instill Council's values, fostering positive engagement among all employees. You will also strategically plan the delivery of services, assets and programs across relevant policy portfolios to ensure the achievement of maximum public value and supports the achievement of the Stonnington Community Vision and the strategic objectives of the Council Plan.
This is a full time position with an annual salary range of . You are based within our bright, modern and sustainable Tooronga Depot office which is located next to Tooronga Train station and walking distance to Tooronga Village Shopping Centre.

Desired Skills and Experience
To be suitable for this role you have a genuine passion for improving the natural environment and sustainability of the environment along with the capabilities and experience to lead teams of within Parks and Open Space, Tree Management, Climate & Sustainability and Waste Strategy & Engagement. You have experience delivering contemporary leadership and management and have highly developed communication and relationship building skills, excellent presentation skills as well as the ability to manage all aspects of senior leadership including human resource management and liasing with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders.
You are a strong leader with a drive for excellence, innovation and organisational change, demonstrating adaptability in complex environments.
You also have:
The ability to strategically plan the delivery of services, assets and programs across relevant policy portfolios to ensure the achievement of maximum public value and supports the achievement of the Stonnington Community Vision and the strategic objectives of the Council Plan.
Demonstrated knowledge of the economic, environmental, political and social issues relating to Local Government services and understanding of the overall context in which the organisation operates.
The ability to establish constructive relationships and influence a broad range of key stakeholders, including employees, volunteers, contractors, managers, executives, Councillors and external organisations.
Relevant tertiary and/or post-graduate qualifications aligned with the role such as open space and tree management, sustainability, engineering, environmental management, business management, public policy, strategic planning.
Proven experience in a senior-level role related to parks and open space, tree management, climate and sustainability and waste strategy.
