How this position will Make the Difference to City of Melbourne…
Reporting to Deputy Municipal Building Surveyor, the objective of your role is to support the MBS plus the Building Control Group in ensuring the health, safety and amenity of building occupants and the public within the City of Melbourne are protected by ensuring buildings and places of public entertainment comply with building legislation.
You will achieve this by assisting or undertaking building surveying and inspection services; responding to building complaints or enquiries, undertaking building inspections and investigations, report and consents, plan checking and audit services in relation to existing buildings, places of public entertainment and buildings under construction. You will also utilise the enforcement tools contained within building legislation.
To be successful in this role, you will be required to deal with the full spectrum of buildings types within the municipality, ranging from domestic to complex multi-storey commercial and historic buildings and also small to large scale events.

- Ability to demonstrate and display City of Melbourne Values – accountability, integrity, courage, respect for self and others, and striving for excellence.
- Eligible for registration as a Building Practitioner in the category of Building Inspector Limited, or Building Surveyor Limited
- Excellent knowledge of Building Act 1993, Building Regulations 2006, National Construction Codes Volume One and Two
- A good knowledge in building legislative standards and procedures pertaining to swimming pools
- Excellent customer service skills
- Good interpersonal and communication skills
- Good report writing skills
- Possess a current drivers licence
Desirable:
- Progress towards Registration as a Building Practitioner in the category of Building Inspector and/or Building Surveyor
- Local government experience in Building Control and demonstrated experience in building inspections and audits for City type buildings
- Experience in the appraisal of temporary structures, scaffolding, gantries, prescribed temporary structures and places of public entertainment
- Experience in emergency management and providing directions in emergency situations
