Job Description

As Planning Investigations Officer you will deliver a quality and customer centric Planning Investigation service for The City of Stonnington which champions improved safety and amenity of the municipality, its residents and visitors, during normal business hours and on evenings and weekends. 

You will be responsible for delivering planning investigation services throughout Stonnington by investigating and administering compliance with the Planning and Environment Act, Planning Permits, theStonnington Planning Scheme and other relevant legislation. 

You will ensure continuous improvement in service levels and contribute to the improved safety and amenity of the municipally and its residents, businesses and visitors. 

This is a permanent full time position with an annual salary range of $92,922 - $100,635 per annum + 10.5 % superannuation. 

When on site you are based within our bright, modern and sustainable Malvern Town Hall on the corner of High Street and Glenferrie Road in Malvern where boutique stores, cafes and health clubs are in abundance. From the office you can easily walk to Malvern Gardens, High Street Armadale or Glenferrie Road. Malvern and Armadale Train Station are a short walk away and tram stops are out the front of the building. 
As a permanent employee you also get access to our wellbeing program, employee assistance counselling program and receive 17.5% additional pay when on annual leave. 

We come together at least 3 days a week, other days can be worked remotely.  From time to time, the role involves early morning/ evening work including on weekends.

Desired Skills and Experience

  • A demonstrated ability to effectively and competently manage complex planning investigation cases, including development and land use matters. 
  • Sound understanding of the importance of maintaining accurate and timely records, including planning investigation reports.  
  • Experience in undertaking planning inspections and audits to ensure compliance with Planning Permits. 
  • Experience in identifying and substantiating breaches, including gathering evidence, conducting interviews and issuing notices to progress and complete investigations. 
  • VCAT and Magistrates Court experience, this is advantageous but not essential. 
  • Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills with a commitment to providing quality customer service.
  • An ability to negotiate and problem solve a variety of matters. 
  • Effectively manage cases when challenged by unfamiliar situations.
  • Respond to challenging situations in a professional manner and be able to engage with various stakeholders in a positive and outcome focused manner. 
  • An ability to deliver a quality and customer centric Planning Investigation service during normal business hours and at times on evenings and weekends.

To be successful you will have a tertiary qualification/training/experience in Municipal / Planning / Building Law with relevant experience in the enforcement of planning legislation as well as a current driver’s license.  Additionally, you will have well developed communication skills, including the proven ability to interact in a professional manner and engage with various stakeholders to achieve successful outcomes for the Stonnington community.
