The Victorian corruption commission has reported on a recent sweep of the corruption prevention measures in place at six local governments.

The Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission’s (IBAC) Local Government Integrity Framework Project highlights both good practices and possible areas for improvement to help councils strengthen their individual integrity frameworks.

The study was undertaken to form a baseline on current systems and practices in place to prevent corruption in local councils in Victoria.

The research found that overall, councils are quite good at identifying and rating risks.

But the application and monitoring of controls came into question.

IBAC says step should be taken to ensure that risks are actually being managed effectively.

The paper (accessible here, in PDF form) also highlights the importance of leadership and setting the ‘tone from the top’, and the role this plays in establishing a culture of intolerance of misconduct and corruption.

The IBAC has provided the following video to explain the review.
