The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has announced it has gratned authorization to a number of innter-Sydney councils to jointly tender and contract for the processing of dry recyclable materials (DRM).

Under the agreement, Burwood Council, Ashfield Council, Auburn Council, City of Canada Bay Council, Leichardt Council and Strathfield Council will be able to collectively shop around for tenders for the contract to provide MRF services.

Granting authorisation will allow the councils to jointly tender for the processing of their kerbside dry recyclables. Therefore, potential tenderers are bidding for a large contract instead of multiple small contracts which is likely to result in more competition for the contract and lower costs for the councils,” ACCC Commissioner Jill Walker said.

“The collective process should also allow the councils to negotiate better terms and conditions from their chosen service provider, which will therefore flow to councils and their residents.”
