Albury City Council has released a public consultation draft of the Our Future: a community sustainability strategy document.

The draft strategy, prepared under the guidance of the Sustainability Advisory Committee, outlines the following:

  • A long-term sustainability agenda for the community to secure economic prosperity
  • Plan for liveable communities
  • Enhance and protect the natural environment

The exposure draft also recommends that objectives are to be monitored and reported annually by Albury City Council.

Committee co-chair, Cr Robert Angus says the draft strategy has been developed by the community for the community, and underlines Albury City's commitment to 'lead the way' in achieving sustainability objectives.

"A key priority is to raise awareness and understanding in the community on sustainability and the environment, and to inform residents and businesses of opportunities for sustainable living," Cr Angus said.

"Investing in sustainable living can provide financial benefits to households and business, and importantly, it will benefit the community and the environment in the long-term. As an example, with energy and water prices continuing to rise, and the likely impact of a carbon tax, the community stands to gain if it were to implement measures to save energy and water."

Other priorities in the draft strategy are in the areas of climate change and energy, security of water supply and water management, safeguarding Albury's economy in a resource and carbon constrained environment, liveable communities and the built environment, and the well-being of the Albury community.

The report will be released for public comment on October 21 and can be accessed at www.alburycity.nsw.gov.au
