Up to $5.5 million in Commonwealth regional arts funding has been made available. 

The Australian Local Government Association (ALGA) has welcomed the new money from the Australia Council’s Playing Australia touring program.

“Our community arts sector has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, with many theatres and venues going dark,” ALGA president Linda Scott said.

“Where possible, we have continued to support arts practitioners and keep our performing arts centres, museums, and galleries open, even when it’s meant incurring a financial loss.

“For example, the Nillumbik Shire Council in Victoria has supported community-focused arts projects through a unique artist in own residence program and by sponsoring the Nillumbik Prize for Contemporary Writing.

“In many remote and regional areas, we are the only ones with the capacity – and the venues – to deliver arts and cultural events.

“Given financial constraints, we need the continuing support of other levels of government to ensure the sustainability of our arts and culture focus.

“We are thrilled that our local theatres will host more touring productions this year, and excited about the social and economic benefits that will flow through to our communities.

The Playing Australia touring program provides funding to performing arts companies to cover their touring costs, providing regional and rural Australians with opportunities to enjoy arts performances in their local community.
