The Australian Local Government Association (ALGA) has welcomed the new Prime Minister, who has made move on rural roads in his first week on the job.

President of ALGA, Mayor Troy Pickard, said that he looks forward to a continued strong relationship with the Federal Government.

“Malcolm Turnbull this morning said that we are living in a time of great opportunities and challenges economically,” Cr Pickard said.

“Local government is strategically placed to assist in the implementation of policies and programs on a region-by-region basis to drive growth and opportunity at the regional level and hence increase economic growth on a national level.

“Exciting economic opportunities lie ahead and local government is ready to play its role in helping local communities take full advantage of these opportunities.”

Earlier this week, Mr Turnbull re-negotiated the Liberty Party’s coalition deal with the Nationals.

As part of the talks, the Nationals were able to secure more support for enhancing rural road and rail infrastructure.

Nationals leader Warren Truss said the Coalition agreement also included a strong commitment to reduce mobile phone and television reception black spots.
