Melbourne’s City of Boroondara’s Waste and Recycling Centre has been named Australia’s best at the 2011 National Transfer Stations Excellence Awards.

The Waste Management Association of Australia, which hosted the awards in Adelaide, specifically mentioned the facility’s environmental measures as best practice. The measures have allowed the facility to seamlessly operate within the broader community.

The Boroondara Waste and Recycling Centre is unique in that it is situated in the middle of a suburban residential area and the WMAA was especially impressed by the Environmental Improvement Plan, which was developed in conjunction with surrounding residents and the Environmental Protection Authority.

The WMAA also hailed the community education programs that are regularly conducted at the centre, as well as the variety of materials that can be recycled, including paints, e-waste, timber waste, motor and cooking oil, green waste and all metals.

Mayor of Boroondara, Councillor Nicholas Tragas travelled to the ceremony to receive the award with a group of Council officers.

"The team at Boroondara’s Recycling and Waste Centre, led by Sam Di Giovanni and Wes Gunn, is a very proud bunch and it is their dedication that has been the catalyst for this award," Cr Tragas said.
