Cattle call for Councillors rich and poor
Government should not only be for the rich, one Local Government Association chief says.
Anyone who has thought about ways to improve their immediate environment should consider throwing their hat in the ring.
Limited financial resources should not prevent potential candidates from raising their hands to serve on Councils, says Local Government Association of South Australia CEO, Wendy Campana.
“While being an elected member is not a paid position, Council Members do receive an allowance to ensure people are not out of pocket. The allowance is set by the Remuneration Tribunal and it varies from Council to Council,” Ms Campana says.
“There is also reimbursement available for travelling costs, and fees for child care or care for another relative so that a Council Member can attend Council meetings.
“Other support including provision of mobile phones or iPads to access agendas and for attending training or conferences may be available depending on Council decisions,” she said.
The Remuneration Tribunal's decisions on allowances can be found here.
Ms Campana said the average Councillor spends around 18 hours per week on Council business.
“Mayors and some Council Members spend more time than this and others will spend less but do things like make fixed times available to meet with residents,” she said.
“Generally, despite the extra work and time most Councillors find the role very fulfilling and worth the sacrifices.
“On the face of it running for Council can look quite daunting but comprehensive training and support is provided to newly-elected Council Members to help them find their way around the business of Local Government.
“If you have a good knowledge of the social, environmental and economic issues facing your community and have the skills to engage with all members of the community and represent the broad views of the community you probably have what it takes to be a Council Member.”
LGASA has released a checklist for people who are considering running for Council to assist in the decision about whether to stand or not.
The Candidates' Checklist is accessible here, while more information on nominations is available here.
