Council fights intervention
The Central Coast Council says it will fight moves to suspend it over a massive financial blowout.
NSW’s Local Government Minister Shelley Hancock this week moved to bail out the council, picking up the pay packets of 2,000 staff.
The State Government has advanced the council $6.2 million to pay workers and suppliers.
Ms Hancock says she will suspend the Mayor, Lisa Matthews, and all 14 councillors, after a mandatory seven-day period to consider any submissions against the suspension.
“There is no question that council needs to be held responsible for these failures,” she said.
“We have known this was happening but not quite so seriously; not quite so seriously because of the withholding of information.”
The council has voted to show cause that it should not go into administration.
Central Coast is the result of a merger between Wyong Shire and City of Gosford councils in 2017, which has been reported to have come with ongoing costs of over $100 million.
It has been suggested that an administrator should be appointed to manage the current deficit, before separating the two councils once more.
Other are pushing for aggressive asset selling and restructuring to fix the financial woes.
The council meets again next Monday.
