Council staff face booze claim
A group of staff members from a Northern Territory council is allegedly under investigation for bringing alcohol into a remote Aboriginal community.
Reports say the individuals are said to have illegally brought alcohol into Maningrida, a community situated approximately 500km west of Darwin.
The NT Police say eight people are facing fines for consuming and possessing prohibited liquor within the restricted area of Maningrida in late June.
However, the police clarified that they do not suspect the group of supplying alcohol to the region, but rather of violating the community's strict rules governing personal alcohol consumption.
Unwilling to reveal the council's name due to legal constraints, the police spokesperson stated; “NT Police do not believe these individuals were supplying alcohol into the region but rather did not follow the rules regarding personal consumption of alcohol in Maningrida”.
