Disgruntled mayors decry new city lines
Some Western Australian mayors have been aggravated by recommendations for council reforms.
Recommendations for the controversial council reforms were revealed by the Local Government Advisory Board this week, and the moves have rubbed some affected mayors entirely the wrong way.
The WA Government is looking to slash the number of metropolitan councils from 30 to about 15, but it has only now announced which ones it is looking to cut or merge.
The WA Local Government Advisory Board recommends the City of Melville should lose the suburbs of Bicton and Palmyra to Fremantle, and that the City of Cockburn's territory should be divided up amongst three surrounding councils.
Reports say the Shire of Serpentine-Jarrahdale was particularly angered by the endorsement of it being absorbed into Armadale.
There were plenty of other changes flagged in the meetings this week, and even more angry councillors.
The public consultation window for the proposed changes is now open, and there is plenty of speculation over the opinions of residents and how much influence they can have, as the WA Government aims avidly for amalgamation.
