The Newcastle Council will place its draft Newcastle 2020 Carbon and Water Management Action Plan on exhibition for a month.

The plan has been developed to lead Newcastle’s carbon mitigation and water management into the next decade, outlining goals and targets for council, schools, businesses and homes.

The Council’s environment and climate-change services manager, Peter Dormand, said in an ABC report that the council was aiming for a 30 per cent carbon reduction, a 50 per cent water reduction, and generating 30 per cent of electricity requirements.

The strategy  will target 20 companies that are the city's biggest greenhouse polluters, as well as its own operations, 11,000 other businesses, residents and the education sector.

The strategy will be available from Monday July 11 at http://www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au
