The Northern Territory Government has released the Greater Darwin Plan which provides the strategic framework that will aim to guide the growth of Darwin city and the surrounding region.

Territory Chief Minister Paul Henderson said the plan was formulated in line with the Territory 2030 growth targets and an extensive community consultation period.

“This plan will help Darwin grow by up to 70 000 extra people over the next 15 years while maintaining the unique character of our communities and suburbs,” Mr Henderson said.

“The Plan outlines initiatives aimed squarely at making housing more affordable and providing more options for Territory families through a balance of infill in existing suburbs and developing new suburbs.

“The Territory is about to enter a period of record employment and population growth and this plan provides the strategic planning framework as Darwin grows into the oil and gas capital of Australia.”

Mr Henderson said the Greater Darwin Plan also identifies key growth areas for public and private investors.

Plan highlights include:

  • The expansion of Darwin International Airport and East Arm Wharf
  • Development of the Darwin Business Park
  • Maintaining a healthy Darwin Harbour
  • Increased housing around Casuarina Shopping Centre and commercial area
  • A master plan to expand upon Parap’s village lifestyle
  • A focus on new land release at Weddell and future development areas around Noonamah
  • Potential for industrial development at Gunn Point
  • A light rail corridor from Darwin CBD to Weddell

The Greater Darwin Plan has been developed in line with the Territory 2030 targets to grow Darwin as a key centre for oil and gas, and an international hub for exports, education and health services and tourism.
