Protesters have disturbed the sleep of Melbourne Lord Mayor Robert Doyle to get him to wake up to the city’s homelessness problem.

Protesters staged a noisy and “threatening” demonstration outside Mr Doyle’s home on the weekend to display their anger the eviction of homeless people in Melbourne’s CBD.

The group waved banners saying; ‘Wait till we find your empty summer house’ and ‘Evicted homeless are at your door, get used to it’.

Photos of the protest appeared on the anti-capitalist website Insurrection News with the faces of those involved obscured.

The group reportedly dispersed quickly after he Lord Mayor called police.

Their outrage was triggered by a City of Melbourne decision to remove homeless people and protesters who had set up large camps in the CBD during the Australian Open tennis tournament.

It is legal to be homeless or sleep rough on the streets of Melbourne, but the law prevents camping in public places.

The Victorian Government put up a $9.8 million funding package to help move those affected into transitional housing.

Mr Doyle said the protesters left notes in his neighbours’ letterboxes with incorrect information the city’s plans to help the homeless.

A group called the Homeless Persons Union intends to fill the city’s streets with rubbish as another form of protest.

“I think this was a very irresponsible action and I think that's further underscored by the fact that their published material asks people to come in and trash the city,” the Lord Mayor said.

“I mean that's just unacceptable.”

The group has promised to return the house again, and Mr Doyle is considering taking legal action against them.

“It wasn't some spontaneous demonstration of homeless people themselves. These were professional protesters,” he said.
