Ipswich City Council has voted to rename a bridge named after a disgraced former mayor.

The Paul Pisasale Bridge was named for the former mayor of the south-east Queensland city, who is currently serving a seven-and-a-half-year jail sentence for a range of offences including fraud and sexual assault.

The council had originally decided to remove the family name from the Paul Pisasale Bridge and Pisasale Drive in December last year, but one councillor moved a motion to maintain the name around two weeks ago, which was supported by three other councillors.

The councillors appear to have changed their minds, voting in favour of changing the names in council chambers this week.

Councillor Sheila Ireland and Paul Tully abstained from voting. Mr Tully was Mr Pisasale's former deputy.

The bridge named after the former mayor and Pisasale Drive - which was named for the former mayor's parents - will get new names and signage in coming weeks.

Pisasale Bridge will remain nameless until then.
