The Australian Government is urging residents across the nation to immerse themselves in National Water Week, and be inundated with a greater appreciation of water-related issues.

Activities will spring up all over the place this week, including pop-up ‘Tap Cafés’ around Sydney to ‘Canoeing on the Canning’ in Perth.

The week is designed to celebrate one of the greatest natural assets in a hot dry country, as well as rain-down knowledge and awareness of the ever-increasing pressure on Australia’s water stocks.

This year’s theme is ‘liveable communities’ on a national scale. National Water Week organisers say it will focus on sustainable water management as a key component of modern development. The Week will urge people look to decision makers and the community and spark behavioural change to ensure water remains a top priority.

Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for the Environment with specific portfolio responsibilities for water, Simon Birmingham says: “As the driest [inhabited] continent in the world, Australia must take special care of our precious water resources, ensuring that every drop is used as efficiently as possible, whether it is being used for household, productive or environmental purposes.”

“I encourage all Australians to at least find one way to be better involved with or informed about water and its importance to us all,” Senator Birmingham said.

Events large and small are going on around Australia as the week of celebration and information flows on.
