Many missed in QLD scheme
A new report finds Queensland’s new social housing scheme will not address the needs of thousands of residents at risk of homelessness.
The Queensland government has put forth a pledge to build 6,365 new homes by 2025. However, experts say this is not enough to address the tens of thousands of people in need of social housing.
The state’s average wait time for housing is two years, and three for residents of remote Indigenous communities.
There are 30,922 households approved for social housing on Queensland’s housing register, but this figure has grown by 78 per cent since 2018.
Queensland auditor general Brendan Worrall issued a report this week that said 19,025 households on the list should be offered housing, but the remaining 11,897 are likely to miss out.
“These dwellings alone will not be sufficient as growth of the register is likely to accelerate with rising interest rates and a tightening rental market,” Mr Worrall wrote in the report.
The government audit found 8,500 occupied social housing dwellings have two or more spare rooms, but there are no processes to move residents into more suitable properties.
The report found that one in five housing applicants had not had their needs correctly recorded by the department, and about half of those had been approved for housing without the required internal checks.
The findings have raised concerns about how existing housing stock is being managed by the department.
“You won't find a more damning report than this one,”: Opposition Leader David Crisafulli said this week.
“It shows seven years of failure, failure to listen, failure to act and above all, failure to deliver.”
The report calls for a new, tighter assessment process and supports for those who can transition out of social housing to find alternative living arrangements.
“I absolutely welcome it and it has come at the right time,” Queensland housing minister Leanne Enoch said.
“We are continuing to build as many social and affordable homes as we possibly can.”
