MDBA wants weir fix
The Murray-Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) wants the Wilcannia weir pool replaced or refurbished.
A recent study called for the existing weir structure to be replaced or repaired, as it has been leaking water for several years, but could not come up with a way for it to meet minimum cost-benefit requirements.
But NSW Water Minister Niall Blair says the weir's future is still being considered.
“Discussions are ongoing about options for the weir, including stabilising the existing weir,” a spokesperson said.
“These discussions will give due consideration to the MDBA recommendations.”
The town was on the brink of needing an emergency bore when weir level dwindled this year.
Central Darling Shire administrator Greg Wright wants a decision soon.
“At the moment it's been a case of all the cases have been made, it's just a matter of waiting for a decision,” he said.
“It has been some time, but we're in the Government's hands and that's about all we can do at the moment, is encourage them to make a good decision for the people of Wilcannia.”
