The New South Wales Minister for Local Government, Don Page, has urged the State’s newly elected councillors to ‘hit the ground running’ and attend a series of of Councillor Workshops to beld across the State.

The 30 workshops are aimed at briefing new and returning councillors on their roles, responsibilities and tools to ensure they have the skills and knowledge to be effective community leaders.

Whether you are a first time councillor or have been re-elected I encourage all elected councillors to take advantage of these workshops,’’ Mr Page said.

“Being a councillor is a fantastic opportunity to make a difference to the local community, however, with this opportunity come many responsibilities.

“These include representing the views of the community while making decisions in their interests, demonstrating conduct that the community expects and deserves and the responsibility to plan and oversee the running of a significant and complex business at the heart of the community.”

The workshops, which will be run by senior staff from the Division of Local Government and supported by the Local Government and Shires Associations of NSW, demonstrate the shared commitment of state and local government to improve the way councils are led.

The workshops are intended to complement local induction sessions being developed by councils, reflecting the shared responsibility of preparing councillors for their new electoral term.
