Nominations for local government elections are now open in Victoria, with the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) encouraging all those interested in serving their communities to stand as a candidate.

Prospective candidates have until noon on 25 September to complete their nomination form and pay their nomination fee with the Returning Officer for their respective councils.

Acting Electoral Commissioner Liz Williams said: “Prospective candidates should act quickly to ensure they don't miss out on lodging their nomination.”

“This year we hope to see more nominations from women, younger people and those from multicultural backgrounds. While being a good councillor is not about your age, gender or heritage, some groups have traditionally been under-represented in the council chamber,” Chief Executive of the Municipal Association of Victoria Rob Spence said.

The elections are currently scheduled for Saturday, 27 October.
