The NSW Government is currently seeking the views of swimming pool owners, local councils, key water safety organisations, State agencies and the wider community about the level of support for proposed amendments to the Swimming Pools Act 1992 and other relevant legislation to increase the safety of very young children around backyard swimming pools.

This follows calls from the NSW Deputy State Coroner and a range of pool safety advocacy organisations to further strengthen the Act.

The Division of Local Government, Department of Premier and Cabinet has released the Swimming Pools Act 1992 Review Discussion Paper, which seeks an indication of the level of support for the proposed amendments, including whether backyard swimming pools should be registered and whether pool barriers should be inspected to better ensure child safety.

Councils are invited to consider and make a submission to the Division on the Discussion Paper. The Discussion Paper and a feedback form to assist with making a submission are at www.dlg.nsw.gov.au.

The closing date for submissions is 5.00pm on Friday 24 February 2012.
