Community consultations with an aim to improve regional governance in the Northern Territory have begun.

Territory Local Government Minister, Adam Giles, said the Government was visiting all corners of the Territory to gather the views and insights of the local people living in regional and remote communities on what they need and expect from their local council.

"The NT Government is committed to a stronger local voice and quality services in regional and remote areas of the Territory," Mr Giles said.

“Over the next three months the Department of Local Government’s regional engagement officers will travel to more than 70 communities across the Territory to hold public meetings and consult with members of the community one-on-one.”

“The consultations will focus on how we improve regional governance to make sure people living in regional and remote areas have a say on local government and other government programs."

Mr Giles said the 21-member Regional Governance Working Group, which was established to develop choices for regional governance for wide spread consultation, had agreed on two local governance options to take to wider community consultation.

“The working group discussed a variety of options for improving regional governance and agreed on two options for consultation - a Regional Council option and a Regional Authorities option," Mr Giles said.
