Former senator Rex Patrick has withdrawn his legal challenge against the results of the recent Adelaide mayoral election in which he was a candidate.

Patrick was narrowly defeated by Jane Lomax-Smith in the November race for Adelaide lord mayor but sought to challenge the result, raising concerns with the state's Electoral Commission about allegations of illegal voter activity.

However, the commission's report on ballot papers weakened Patrick's case, causing him to withdraw his challenge.

Patrick says he has spoken to Lomax-Smith and wished her the best during her time in office, stating that the matter is now finalised.

Meanwhile, former councillor Alexander Hyde, who was also narrowly defeated, will continue his challenge, stating that many illegally cast votes were counted, affecting the election.
