SA keen to shine light on corruption
University of Adelaide researchers have found a strong desire among South Australian residents for the establishment of a corruption court.
SA's Local Government Association commissioned an extensive survey by university experts, looking at attitudes to corruption. It found a high level of interest in and concern about government corruption and the establishment of an Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC).
The study also found a strong appetite within the public and Local Government sectors for intervention and initiative in tackling corruption.
It showed people who have undertaken training or education about corruption were less concerned about corruption as an issue in SA and Local Government.
LGA of SA chief Wendy Campana said people who have training or information on the subject also have a better understanding of inappropriate conduct, where and how to report inappropriate conduct and the protections available for those who report.
The survey, based on a NSW ICAC survey, was commissioned and conducted on the local level, and has not been matched by a State Government focused survey.
The report's eight central recommendations are currently before the Parliament, a copy is available here (PDF).
