The Northern Territory is looking at changes to the act governing local governments and Aboriginal communities.

The NT Department of Local Government and Regions says it is reviewing the Local Government Act, and wants interested parties to have a say.

The Act is used to define and determine all elements of the local government system, from city councils to nature reserves, mining tenements and Aboriginal community living areas.

The review aims to ensure the Act is effective and up-to-date.

The department says this will ensure the legislation underpinning local government is working effectively for the benefit of the communities and sector.

Members of the public, local government, land councils and other industry sectors are encouraged to provide written submissions or suggestions.
