Tassie town to plan post-peak oil
One council has become the first in Tasmania to implement the Local Government Peak Oil Action Plan, which seeks to help fight the ever-increasing cost of fuel.
The Meander Valley Council has ratified its plan, stating it understands the costs and vulnerability associated with reliance on oil and will seek to do something about it.
Undertaking the Peak Oil Action Plan will allow Meander Valley businesses and communities to take a step into the energy and cost efficiency future, the local Mayor says.
Meander Valley mayor, Craig Perkins said the council’s plan will form a blueprint for businesses and other groups to cut their ties to fossil fuels. He says it is especially important in an area where so many services live on the availability of fuel.
“There are different views in the community about where oil vulnerability goes, or doesn't go,” Mayor Perkins said.
“But one thing we do know is that if the price of oil continues to rise that poses risks for us as a council and risks for the community and the business community as well.
“So to come up with a plan that has a whole swathe of practical actions that can be embedded into economic plans, future economic planning, and also give back to the community, so they can understand and take some of those actions as well.”
