Eighteen of the nation’s 565 local councils and shires have taken out Australia’s top local government awards in this year’s National Awards for Local Government.

The prestigious awards recognise the dedication and hard work that local governments do in supporting their communities.

Run since 1986, this year saw 192 entries by councils and shires across the country.

“This year’s category winners showcase the diversity of our local governments, with winners coming from places like East Arnhem Land, Rockhampton, Liverpool Plains, the Grampians and our major capital cities,” Minister for Local Government Anthony Albanese said.

In coming weeks, the independent panel chaired by Paul Bell, President of the Local Government Association of Queensland, will assess the category winners and determine a national winner, which will be announced in June.
